Calorimetry in obese women: comparison of two different operating indirect calorimeters together with the predictive equation of Harris and Benedict

In this study the measurements of two different indirect calorimeters from COSMED (Fitmate and Quark RMR) were correlated and analysed for better adequacy.

The aim of this study was to check measurements of two indirect calorimeters on obese women and then comparing the results with predictive formulas (the popular Harris Benedict Equation). Two COSMED indirect calorimeter systems were chosen: the portable Fitmate and the stationary Quark RMR. Then, the more stable system was confronted against the Harris Benedict Equation (HBE).

The conclusions show that "the ventilated hood of the stable IC may provide more reliable results than other techniques… based on the fact, that a facemask could lead to discomfort and alteration in subjects natural breathing patterns” "The Harris Benedict Equation was found to overestimate the measured RMR of Quark RMR. Though the HBE was developed on lean subject, it cannot be considered as a reliable equation for obese subjects."
